Our Solutions for Protein Purification
Science Hub

An efficient purification workflow is essential for achieving pure protein solution for downstream applications such as structural studies or production of therapeutic biomolecules. Protein purification can be performed in various scales in columns with different sizes. Chromatography columns can be purchased pre-packed or empty columns and loose resin of your choice can be purchased separately. In addition to columns, protein purification can also be performed in batch utilizing gravity flow or centrifugation.
Affinity chromatography
Affinity chromatography can be used as the only purification step or as a method to remove specific impurities. However, most often it is incorporated as an initiating step in purification workflows followed by additional purification steps, depending on the required purity for downstream applications. For example, his tagged proteins have affinity to both Nickel and Cobolt, and antibodies to protein A or Protein G and can be purified with these resins. BioNordika offers HiFliQ colums and resins for wide range of proteins.
Fastback resin for antibody purification

Ion Exchange (IEX) Chromatography Resins
Affinity chromatography can be used as the only purification step or as a method to remove specific impurities. However, most often it is incorporated as an initiating step in purification workflows followed by additional purification steps, depending on the required purity for downstream applications. For example, his tagged proteins have affinity to both Nickel and Cobolt, and antibodies to protein A or Protein G and can be purified with these resins. BioNordika offers HiFliQ colums and resins for wide range of proteins.
IEX Chromatography Resins
Ion exchange chromatography (IEX) media separates molecules based on their charge. The functional groups in IEX media have charges that bind molecules with opposite charges. Release of the bound molecules from the medium is achieved by an increasing concentration of a similarly charged molecule. IEX chromatography can also be used to remove specific impurities. Media is available in 25 ml pack size. Super Plus is standard IEX media with reduced bead size (20-50 µm) for maximum resolution. 6HF Plus is general purpose preparative grade IEX media. Big Bead Plus contains large beads (150-350 µm) for viscous or cell-containing samples.
CM = Weak cation exchanger - purification of positively charged proteins
DEAE = Weak anion exchanger - purification of negatively charged proteins
- Fastback 6HF Plus CM, Fastback Big Bead Plus CM, Super Plus CM, Fastback 6HF Plus DEAE, Fastback Big Bead Plus DEAE, Super Plus DEAE

Size Exclusion Columns
Size exclusion Columns for FPLC
Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) separates proteins based on their size and shape. SEC is suitable as the final purification step.
ProteoSEC Size Exclusion Columns
- Three different column sizes: 11/30, 16/60 and 26/60
- Separation range: 1-10, 3-70, 6-600 or 6-5000 kDa
Manually packed columns
Empty columns and loose resins allows manual column packing with affordable prices. The loose resins are available in two different grades: High performance super resins and fastback resins. Both resin types have excellent tolerance to reducing agents. Contact info@bionordika.fi for more information.
Concentration
Proteus X-spinner Ultrafiltration Concentrators for dilute, viscous or sticky proteins
2,5 ml non-stick ultrafiltration concentrator provides the highest possible protein recoveries due to the low protein binding CTA membrane and reversed filtration orientation.
- Available in 5, 10, 20, 100 & 300 kDa MWCOs
- Sample volume range: 0.1- 2.5 ml
Custom Column Packing Services
Magnetic beads
NEB’s magnetic affinity beads enable rapid, centrifuge-free protein purification for manual and automated workflows, making them ideal for high-throughput screening, pull-down assays, and small-scale elutions.
NEBExpress® Ni-NTA Magnetic Beads
For IMAC purification of His-tagged proteins under native or denaturing conditions. Offer rapid magnetic separation, high binding capacity (≥7.5 mg/ml bead volume), low nickel leakage, and compatibility with detergent-containing buffers.
Amylose Magnetic Beads
For small-scale purification of MBP-tagged proteins. The 10 µm superparamagnetic beads provide a binding capacity of 10 µg MBP fusion protein per mg of beads and can also be used in pull-down assays.
Chitin Magnetic Beads
For purification of CBD-tagged proteins and IMPACT™ workflows. Regenerable magnetic matrix with a binding capacity of 2 mg protein/ml bead volume; on-column tag removal yields highly pure native protein.
Hydrophilic Streptavidin Magnetic Beads
For capture and pull-down of biotinylated proteins, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. Their hydrophilic surface minimizes non-specific binding, while the high-affinity streptavidin–biotin interaction enables efficient target isolation in rapid, automation-friendly magnetic workflows.
Solubilization of membrane proteins
Membrane protein isolation is more tedious process than the isolation of cytosolic proteins because the target protein needs to be kept in soluble, native and functional form when isolated from the lipid bilayer. The best method to achieve this is with the help of detergents. Detergents are amphipathic molecules that have both hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail, just like the lipid membrane phospholipids.
In aqueous solution detergent monomers form micelle structures (micellization) where the hydrophobic tails are facing towards the micelle core and hydrophilic heads are out towards the solution. This way the detergents can mimic the lipid membrane environment and are able to capture the membrane protein inside the micelle.
Detergents
Anatrace offers a wide portfolio of detergents for membrane protein extraction. These detergents are available in two different purities: Anagrade with >99% purity and Sol-Grade >95% pure.
These include:
- Maltosides - maltose derived detergents
- Glucosides - glucose derived detergents
- MG Class - modeled from the most popular alkyl glycoside detergents
- Amine Oxides
- CYMALs
- HEGAs & MEGAs
- Thio glucosides & maltosides
Most commonly used detergents
Non-ionic, sugar-based detergents derived from maltose or glucose are most often the first choice as they are non-denaturing and they do not destroy protein-protein interactions. DDM or DM has been used in the extraction of over 80% of eukaryotic membrane proteins.
DDM (Docecyl Maltoside) #D310
- Mild detergent that forms large micelles: high efficiency at low concentrations
- Good for protein solubilization, purification, crystallization and cryo-EM
DM (Decyl Maltoside)
- Shortened version of DDM
- Smaller micelles and easier to remove than DDM
OG (Octyl Glucoside)
- Slightly harsher than DDM, DM or LMNG
LMNG (Lauryl Maltose Neopentyl Glycol)
- High Efficiency at low concentrations
- Currently ~50% of G protein-coupled receptor structures have been found with LMNG
